Sikh
Council Of Australia hosted the first World Sikh Conference in Sydney
on 18 and 19 September 2004. Over the past few years World Sikh
Conferences have been held in America, Canada, India and the UK
but it is the first time that a conference of this type will be
held in Australia.
The aim of this Conference was:
- To
discuss issues affecting the Sikhs, locally and internationally.
- To
discuss issues, which help, promote unity and coherence amongst
the Sikhs and universality of the Sikh philosophy, through exchange
of experiences and ideas of the Sikh scholars from all over the
world.
- To
discuss ways to promote and propagate the basic philosophy of
Sikh religion, amongst Australians, which is being misunderstood
because of misrepresentation and misinterpretations.
- To
discuss the future of our children in this multicultural society.
- To
initiate discussion and seek conformation as to how far we should
accept and implement edicts in the light of the social and cultural
environments we live in.
- To
seek representation of other religious scholars to participate
in cross cultural and religious discussions.
- To
encourage local Sikh scholars to present discussion papers on
Sikhism.
